Jumping The Shark
No. 1 In A Possible Series of Modern Definitions That You Will Want To Use In Everyday Conversation
No 1.- Jumping The Shark
That moment when things have taken a turn from which they can no longer return. Normally associated with TV shows, when they have been going that little bit too long.
The definition is born from the moment Happy Days when they had moved to Hollywood, and The Fonz had become a water stuntman and was doing a waterski jump of a shark. That was the defining moment of the end of that show.
Usually you cannot tell the exact point of jumping the shark until it is too late and that moment has passed. It is always better to have pre-empted the shark jumping.
Although it is mostly a TV show thing ie. 24 jumped the shark when SKY started showing it, you can of course adapt it to other situations. ie. When *Generic company name* jumps the shark we can go and live in the Caribbean forever!
